Research and Level Design

This week we had to research about game lead designers of games that have conveyed an emotion or message that I wanted to convey in my individual game idea project or just research how the way they designed the game that it made you feel the way you did while playing the game. This really helped me lock my 2D idea and what emotions I wanted to convey and how I will be able to do it, through this research I was able to see how Darksiders 2 made the call to adventure and the narrative of the world is so in-depth that we are drawn into the adventure. Also the main theme of the family bond is present throughout all the story as Death will save war above all else.
As for the 2d research on Valiant hearts they made an amazing WW1 stories and the fact that these 5 strangers influence each other’s lives in a time where there was little hope in the battle this is also conveyed from the designer not painting a rosy picture of war they kept it in perspective bloody warfare “It’s not pretty” this also enforces the feelings of hopelessness and the horror they went through which makes it more emotional when the player reaches the end of the story to find a happy ending despite all the despair.
The level design element tasks that we had to do was to accurately scale and include all the briefs elements in our level that will be interesting and engaging to interest player and fun gameplay. I have currently only had designed 1 level trying to include all the brief but I think im lacking the fun and interesting level design so I will have to make more level variations to make a fun interesting level design and game.
